Traditional Villages

 Situated around the National Park "Valia Calda" and Ski Center Basilitsas are some of the prettiest villages in the prefecture of Grevena. The Avdella, from where came the first Balkan filmmakers (brothers Manakia) and Perivoli are two of the main summer resorts in the prefecture of Grevena. Through the winter these villages are virtually deserted but they are full during the summer, farmers with their flocks also come for pastoral grazing.

Samarina and Smiksi, famous Vlach villages, Filippaioi, Aetia, Lavda, Dotsiko and Mesoloúrion are some of the villages which receive an abundance of tourists during the winter because of their proximityto the Ski Center Vasilitsas. Many of these villages are famous for their traditional festivals during the summer months and especially the day of Assumption.

The beautiful village of Spilia, which is situated at the foot of Mount Stavros is one of the oldest settlements in Western Macedonia. Another famous village is Ziaka built at an altitude of 900 meters with wonderful views of Orliakas. The famous chieftain Theodore Ziaka is from here and it is name the village bears.

Kalloni, Megaro and Kallirachi are three other very picturesque villages reminiscent of Epirus. The southwestern part of the prefecture, Kypoureio, Monachiti, Krania and the isolated Mikrolivado are defined by their alpine landscape.

Less picturesque but with more life throughout the year are the villages located on the north side of the county. Sirini, Amigdalas, Elefthero, Agios Giorgos, Kibotos, Vatolakos and Myrsina are among these villages.

On the eastern side of the county are several villages, such as Poros and Knidi, which suffered major damage during the earthquake of 1995. As a result of the disaster most of the villages had to be reconstructed and have therefore lost some of their charm, but the surrounding nature is unchanged. So Knidi, Itea, Nisi and Agaleoi and other nearby villages, built on the banks of Aliakmona, have a rich natural environment. In the same area are Sarakina and Palaiochori, which were two of the biggest villages in the county during the Turkish occupation.

Other beautiful villages of the county are Trikomo or Zalovo which was created by the union of three settlements. Kosmati, Aemilian are amonst other villages in the southern and southeastern part of the county. The most famous village in the region is Karpero, and is particularly known as the town of Deskatis, which is an autonomous administrative, social, cultural and commercial center.
